FAQs
As a Humanistic Therapist I work from a Person centred core bringing in a variety of other well-known and accepted therapeutic approaches such as Gestalt, Psychodynamics, Jungian Analytical, CBT, DBT and others depending on what would most likely help in the therapy session. The approaches are blended and weaved together forming fluid work aimed at easing distress and working to smooth out emotional and intellectual imbalances bringing a sense of ease.
I have a long history of experience in working with a wide variety of issues with a wide variety of people but each person is an individual and that is a factor requiring an experienced therapist.
We generally do not have contact between sessions as it is advised by Registering bodies that Counselling is not an emergency service and it is not considered conducive to therapy to be in contact between sessions normally, however, in those situations I would follow protocol and make contact with the relevant services and do whatever is needed for the safety of the client based on the type of crisis situation it is.
Conversations during therapy are confidential. The only time this changes is if something is disclosed where someone is at risk of harm such as (but not limited to) Safe Guarding issues or threats of terrorism.
"Cultural competency means being aware of your own cultural beliefs and values and how these may be different from other cultures—including being able to learn about and honor the different cultures of those you work with
.... I believe that cultural differences are vast and I also believe that there can be cultural differences even within the same culture. I consider myself to be able to put aside my own or societies cultural beliefs and values as when I work, I am focused in working within the client’s inner world, not my own but I remain aware of my own values and beliefs at the same time, without them being of any influence to the work that I do.
I support effective Psychiatric and Primary care and I believe that medication can take an important role in mental health treatment in many circumstances. If Primary Care Doctors wished to discuss a client with me, I would discuss doing so with my client first.
I welcome feedback and concerns from clients and would always welcome discussions about the therapy process with them if it was supportive to the well-being of the client.
I regularly discuss with each client how they are feeling about therapy, how their mental health and wellbeing is and ways forward and these types of conversations inform me of their progress and success.
Yes there can be regular tasks, exercises and technique practices that would be done outside of the therapy time that support therapy. Sometimes these are discussed beforehand and sometimes they happen by way of process due to changes that might be taking place for the client.
Sometimes a set amount of sessions is arranged when starting therapy and sometimes it is open ended. We would regularly check in periodically to discuss what work we might still do, might choose not to do (as the client might want to take a break and return to therapy later) and explore how long we think something might take.
Counselling sessions are 1 hour long and usually weekly. Sometimes, after a certain amount of positive emotional and psychological movement has taken place for a person, they might feel they would like to move to fortnightly 1 hour sessions. I feel however, that it is important to begin with weekly sessions to keep up the momentum of change while having effective and professional support during these more significant psychological changes that often happen in the early stages of the therapeutic process.
Maybe don’t use vision to look for a therapist but to seek to meet more than one therapist and FEEL how it feels to be with them. This is often the best indicator of the right therapist. Sometimes we can also be drawn to a person advertising online by what they write and if this resonates with you.
A person would have to check their policy to see if therapy is covered based upon my Registering organisation.
Payment can be made by cash, BACS or Paypal on my site.
We would regularly discuss how therapy is feeling and whether it is still needed but by the time therapy is no longer needed, a person usually knows how they feel about most things far more than they ever did, so it is likely that they will just know.
